Ribes sanguineum
Flowering Currant

Ribes rubrum, is a member of the gooseberry family is native to parts of Britain and Western Europe, from Belgium through France, Portugal to Northern Spain, from Norway to Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Northern Italy. A deciduous shrub it grows between 2 and 3 m and about as wide. It is grown commonly around European gardens for it profuse flowers. It berrier are not particulary edible. As bonsai they are grown for their flpwer display.

Full sun to partian shade. More the sun more the fruits and more the watering is required too.


The Ribes love their water especially during theri fruiting so water well. allow soil surface to dry between waterings.


Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and with a high potasium fertiliser to help with flowers and fruiting as soon as flowering begins

Leaf and Branch Pruning:

Prune in summer as leaves have settled and lateral shoots start to appear on current years growth.

Re-potting & Growing Medium:

Every 2-3 years for younger plants and ever 3-5 years for mature plants. Repot in Early spring before leaves unflold, or after flowering in August. Use a well drained soils mix. 3 Parts Akadama and 1 part pumice.


Ribes are best shaped by cut and grow method. Branches are brittle and scars easily.
