Larix decidua
European Larch

Tall decidous conifer tree upto 150 feet. Bark in younger trees is greyish but dark brown in older trees. Strongly smells of turpentine. Range mainly in Central europe in the Highlands a Pioneering Species the Larch is Fast growing and shade inloterant.


Formal upright, Informal Upright, Slanting, Cascade, Semi-cascade, Literate, Rock-over-root, Clasped-to-rock, Twin-trunk, Group planting, Saikei




Full sun, does not grow well in like shady areas. Keep small bonsai pots frost free. Cool Greenhouse during very cold winters. Shade during very hot summers.


Regulary throughout the growing season. Sparingly during the winter do not allow soil to dry out.


Feed in spring and late summer. Feed with general purpose fertiliser or slow relase fertiliser. Feed in moderation to ensure

Leaf and Branch Pruning:

Through out growing season pinch to keep shape of plant. In Winter prune back branches to shape.

Re-potting & Growing Medium:

Every year just before buds show in spring. Use free draining soil, 1part peat or leaf mould, 1 part loam, 1 part sharp sand.


Wire in winter to give shape. In young plants that are grown rapidly best to remove wiring during summer to avoid wiring forrows.
